 Best Home Printer

Best Home Printer

The best home printer can mean different things to different people. It's all about what printer features you want and any budget considerations.

A good way to come up with the best home printer is to figure out just what kind of printing you do the most. Are there other activities like faxing, scanning, photo printing, and additional features that you want? Do you print a lot or a little? Do you print color more or mostly just black on white?

There are two major types of home printers, inkjet or laser. Both come in black only or in full color. Color laser printers have come down in purchase price and when you incorporate the materials in the long term costs you might be surprised at the small difference between laser and inkjet models.

Another important consideration is the ease of setup and installation, whether you will be sharing the printer on a network, and how many users might be involved. Do you want one of the all in one printers that offer many features or just plain basic functionality in an entry level model

The most popular small home or home office black and white printer is the Brother HL-2140. It costs about $80 and the cartridge runs about $43 (yield is 2600 per manufacturer). It a good choice for low volume printing and is probably the lowest price model around.

The color lasers are a different animal in many ways. Most take 4 cartridges, 3 color and one black. This can get pricey pretty quick so be forewarned. The lowest priced model considering both the printer purchase price and cartridge price is the Samsung CLP 315W. the printer runs about $150 and the black cartridges are about $36 each and color about $31 each if you buy three at a time. That's about $280, just to get started. No real number of prints per cartridge is offered by the manufacturer due to the nature of color printing.

All in one inkjet printers offer multiple capabilities like faxing, scanning, and copying. Most of these printers have software that you can use to organize and edit photos, do basic character recognition, and a few printing chores like multiple prints on one page. If you don't mind inkjet prints, these are probably the best value overall.

The PIXMA MP560 Wireless Inkjet Photo All-In-One is the most popular models right now due to the high quality prints and over all low cost. The printer sells for around $85 and a set of 4 cartridges is about $38. It has all the bells and whistles plus wireless connectivity and auto 2 sided printing. And the quality is exceptional. No real info on the number of prints per cartridge but that's normal for color printers.

Another contender is the HP Photosmart C4780 All-in-One that sells for about $75 and the 4 cartridge prices are about $30. If you do more documents than photos, this might be your best bet. it too is wireless and comes with a lot of software to do many things. The quality of prints is good and for a casual printer it's a great fit.

There are literally hundreds of models of printers out there and many are very good. We chose the models above due to the amount of sales and many positive customer reviews. And the best printer for you really depends on exactly what you use your printer for most and these are just suggestions that many people are very satisfied with and recommend.

Got A Budget? The first or second most important factor for most people is the cost of the home printer. Don't forget to consider the ink or toner costs since they will be ongoing and certainly eclipse the purchase price many times over. On some of the entry level inkjet printers, the replacement cartridges can cost more than the printer! And always take any cost per print or printer volume estimates provided by the manufacturer with a grain of salt. It's kind of like the miles per gallon listed on new cars, they configured under the best possible conditions and in real every day situations may not be accurate. The best home printer choice may not be the one with the cheapest purchase price.

Features: When you look at what kind of printing tasks you will using on a daily basis, most people find that an All In One Printer is the best choice. Most offer scanning, faxing, and copying which are the most common features most home users might need. The prices for the inkjet versions start at about $60 and depending on the volume and any attachments (like wireless connectivity) or paper sizes can go up to $400. Some with special photo capabilities can require up to 6 cartridges too.

Warranties: Take a moment and check out the warranties offered on any printer model of choice. Pay attention to the recommended volumes, those are good numbers to consider when making your final choice. Don't buy a low cost entry level unit that you will wear out in a matter of months.

The best home printer is the model that offers a reasonable purchase price, the features that you want or need for the users, and acceptable operating expenses. Watch for sales, check prices online, and you will usually save a few extra bucks on any choice you make..
